CANADA’S LEGACY BETRAYED?
Canada’s history of justice and global responsibility is being undermined. Once a champion of peace, the nation now falters under Prime Minister Mark Carney, who seems to have rejected the two-state solution, a cornerstone of international law and Canada’s values.

Canada’s proud history of justice and global responsibility is being dismantled. Once a champion of peace under leaders like Lester B. Pearson, the nation now falters under Prime Minister Mark Carney, who appears to have rejected the two-state solution—a cornerstone of international law and Canada’s own values.
French President Emmanuel Macron stands firm on advancing peace, declaring:
“The upcoming conference on the two-state solution this June must be a turning point”
His statement is in alignment with the 1967 UN Security Council Resolution 242. This resolution, which calls for Israel’s withdrawal from territories occupied in 1967 and a just settlement for refugees, was unanimously supported by Canada under Pearson’s leadership.
At the time, Canada’s UN representative, George Ignatieff, cast a vote in favor of Resolution 242, reflecting Pearson’s commitment to a balanced, multilateral approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Yet Carney has dismissed this framework, rejecting a Palestinian state alongside Israel—a direct contradiction of Canada’s official policy, which endorses a “sovereign, independent, viable, democratic, and territorially contiguous Palestinian state.”

Carney’s rejection is a profound ethical failure because it undermines UN Security Council Resolution 242, a legally binding framework that Canada, through Ignatieff’s vote, helped establish. This resolution embodies the global consensus on achieving peace through mutual recognition—a legacy Pearson and Ignatieff fought for. By abandoning it, Carney erases Canada’s moral credibility, risking its standing on the world stage.
Canada’s principles are at stake.
